Planned Giving Advisors
Attorney, Blog Author, Consultant …
Finding myself without a traditional summer law firm job going into my first law school summer (in 1992), I happened upon a job with a local Jewish federation running their clean up campaign (telemarketing/college student callers) and interning with their planned giving director. Little did I know that this would start my career in planned giving – now over 20 years. Over this time, I’ve worked for, with and/or advised well over 300 nonprofit organizations in planned giving and legal issues related to fundraising, nonprofit organizations and estate planning. The last six years before launching Planned Giving Advisors, I was a Managing Director for Changing Our World, Inc., one of the largest U.S.-based fundraising consulting firms.
At Changing Our World, I began to witness an anomaly regarding planned giving in the nonprofit world. Entire databases of donors were heading into retirement years yet nonprofits employed less planned giving staff. What was once a growing career option in planned giving was no longer the case for lawyer-fundraisers like myself. Yet, consulting firms like ours weren’t expanding in this area either – the fee structures were more than the market would bear. Faced with a career choice – do I become a capital campaign consultant or general fundraiser? – I happened again upon another unplanned, fateful choice.
After leaving Changing Our World in 2011 to try out a different career direction into major gifts – which I quickly found was not for me – I found an all but dead planned giving job market. So, I launched Planned Giving Advisors to fill the void in the nonprofit world of planned giving specialists and expertise!
Since our launch in late 2011, we have worked with over 30 different institutions and trained over 600 fundraisers through our webinar and onsite training programs.
Oh, and I’m the author of The Planned Giving Blog (incorporated into Planned Giving Advisor’s website) which has over 1,300 subscribers and over 105000 visitors since 2010.
